Do you love books, believe in libraries, have a few days a year to donate to a great cause? The Friends have a volunteer opportunity for you, or you and a spouse or friend, to support the library and community by helping to manage the flow of books for book sales and the used book store that will reopen in the new downtown library in the fall of 2013. Revenue from sales and the store will allow the Friends to make a significant annual grant to the library to enhance the collection and programs throughout the city. The work includes:
• Learning the book flow process, which involves sorting and storing donated materials to be sold by the Friends to raise money for Madison libraries
• Interviewing, training, and scheduling other volunteers to work on book sorting
• Supporting the book sale coordinator by organizing materials for the sales
• Helping with stocking in the new book store
A love of books, delight in helping the community, ability to work with others, and experience in coordinating programs or projects would be the ideal background for the book manager. But having the time and willingness to learn the process, work with the board to establish policies for volunteers once the new library opens, and to spend an occasional hour or two meeting and training other volunteers, would be the major qualifications needed. The Manager will have to be able to get to the library to train book sorting volunteers as needed, set up the volunteer work schedule, and keep the Friends board of directors informed regarding needs or issues.
Support and on-the-job training will be provided.
